Texas Tour 2013: Arlington Museum of Art Press Release

Dr. Michael Dean

Press Release, September 13, 2013

Clarinetist Michael Dean to Perform at Arlington Museum of Art

Arlington, TX.  As part of his Texas Tour 2013 “Mysteries: New Music for Solo Clarinet,” American clarinetist Michael Dean will be giving a free clarinet recital at the Arlington Museum of Art on Thursday, September 19 at 7 p.m. The museum is located at 201 West Main Street in Arlington.

“One of the most interesting works on the recital is Half Moon at Checkerboard Mesa by Utah composer and former MTV rocker Phillip Kent Bimstein,” Dean said. “Phillip recorded natural sounds (such as frogs, crickets and coyotes) near his home close to Zion National Park in Southern Utah and then shaped them into musical phrases and rhythms on his computer. He then wrote a score for a live musician to perform with the taped arrangement of the sounds. The piece is a fun mix of clarinet, hip-hopping frogs, crickets, coyotes and 80’s rock and roll,” he said.

Recital appearances at Carnegie Hall, the prestigious international ClarinetFest, and the NACWPI National Symposium headline Michael Dean’s extensive and versatile performing career. On a solo recital and master class tour of music schools in England he was praised as “dynamic,” “inspirational,” and “a brilliant performer.” Other recent tours have taken him to California, New York, Florida, Arizona, and Nevada. His new soon-to-be-released CD, Mysteries, will be available during the tour. Mysteries and his other CD’s are available for purchase and digital download at iTunes.com, Amazon.com, and CDBaby.com.

In addition to being an active performer and master clinician, Dr. Michael Dean maintains a private clarinet teaching studio in Hurst, Texas. As “ClarinetMike,” he writes for his own widely-read clarinet blog, clarinetmike.wordpress.com. He was formerly Associate Professor of Clarinet at Southeast Missouri State University and is a Past President of the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors (NACWPI).

“I’m excited about kicking off my tour of Texas with a performance in Arlington in front of a number of family and friends.” he said. His tour of Texas continues with stops at Baylor University, Texas State University-San Marcos, TCU and other schools in the area.
