New Khachaturian Clip on – Read the Story

Finally got permission to post an additional audio clip on my website.  The clip is a live version of movement III of Khachaturian’s Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano,

As some of you know, Khachaturian’s music is a copyright mess. This is because the USA government decided a few years ago to sign an international treaty called the Uruguay Round Agreements Act. This agreement, in addition to many other things, restored the copyright on the music of Khachaturian and several other ex-Soviet composers.

First thing I did was contact the Harry Fox Agency. They emailed me to contact the publisher directly. I contacted the publisher (International Music Co.) and they directed me to contact the copyright holder.  So, it turned out that the copyright holder was not a Russian company or some member of the Khachaturian family. The copyright holder turned out to be the USA music publisher, G. Schirmer, Inc. in the Big Apple, New York City!  Thankfully, they gave me permission to post the clip on The nice person I spoke to there at Schirmer HQ in NYC (Kevin) told me I could post it for one year and then I’d have to ask for permission again. (I will.)
